Permanent exhibition

Currently, the building is closed for visitors due to massive repair and restorantion work.

The exhibition is located at the Girls’ Secondary School, designed and built under the leadership of Arch. Joseph Schnitter  in 1881. It is arranged chronologically on two floors. There are more than 200 original artworks, which trace the development of Bulgarian art from the Renaissance to the present days. There are famous authors presented in the gallery as well as characteristic style trends.

Icon exhibition was established in 1975.  It is situated near the Renaissance church “St. Constantine and Elena” on the round defense tower of early Byzantine wall in the Old Town. In the gallery are exposed the best examples of icons from the Bishopric collection of the gallery. They represent the Eastern Christian art from the Plovdiv region and entire South Bulgaria by the end of the fifteenth century until the late nineteenth century.

Tsanko Lavrenov / 1896-1978 / is one of the most famous Bulgarian artists. He is a model of original talent, high scholarship, boundless energy and incredible creative imagination. The exhibition includes some of the best works of the artist.

On the first floor of the gallery is presented the exhibition “Mexican Art” – modern Mexican graphic arts, crafts and replicas of stone sculptures and ceramics. The exhibits were donated in honor of the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state and the gallery was opened in 1981.

Encho Pironkov (born in 1932) is from the generation of artists who in the 60s of the twentieth century modernized the look of the Plovdiv School of Painting as well as Bulgarian art. There are 45 works, donated by the artist, covering various periods of his creative development.

The exhibition halls are situated in a building with typical urban architecture from the beginning of XX century. There are temporary exhibitions presented on the both floors of the building, which are related to anniversaries of Bulgarian artists, as well as the history and problems of the cultural life of the country. There are also exhibitions of foreign artists, experimental exhibitions and children exhibitions.

The Art Gallery offers a general route ticket for all exhibitions.
